Why ERP for small businesses can make a real difference to survival rates
by admin on Nov.14, 2009, under General
Running a company efficiently is about organisation, focus and process as a massive 55% of businesses fail in their first five years of existence. The experts offer banal opinions as to why this occurs. I consistently see three key reasons why this tragedy occurs so often and to so many people with different experience, education and knowledge.
The primary reason is insufficient market comprehension.
Refusal to look at the water ahead. For example Individuals have the concept, build the product and then sit back and wait for the market to flock and buy. In information age there is no excuse for lack of research before wasting any time and money on creating a product until you have robust confirmed there is a market.
The number two reason is lack of understanding of the basics of business.
A significant proportion of people starting a company know their trade, how to deliver a service or build a product, but know very little about running a company. Having the ability to read and follow the balances in the profit and loss or the balance sheet is a vital. The basic knowledge of accounting is not very often imparted well by the business manuals, online resources and experts in the know such as accountants and bookkeepers. This subject is further exacerbated by manufacturers and their partners thrusting small business accounting software at fledgling businesses.
Small business accounting software isnt a complete answer.
Large enterprises years ago worked out that all of their Information systems should be fused together to give them a complete picture of the business and then along came ERP software solutions and packages. One vendor NetSuite had the foresight to see the opening in the market and started offering its small business ERP software. NetSuite competitors have since emerged.
The third reason businesses don’t survive is because of lack of process and procedures that provide the essential behaviours and consistency a business must have to perform efficiently.

A new dawn for small business technology
by admin on Nov.06, 2009, under General
You may have heard of SAP systems. It’s a software platform deployed by thousands of medium sized and very large corporations all over the planet. The prime use of the system is to connect the whole business together and enable hundreds and often thousands of staff members to store, share and view knowledge about the physical and financial processes of the firm. Significant organisations are run by intelligent people who understand the strategic value of this type of software, such as how it can give them an appreciation of why problems are happening inside their organisation or where there might be opportunity for improvements.
This type of software application is commonly known as ERP. It is very sophisticated, very costly and can take months and often years to deploy. A deployment of ERP software can cost ten’s of millions of dollars but this doesn’t stop major businesses purchasing these applications.
Until a few months ago software like this was not available or financially viable for tiny enterprises. As a result tiny firms have not been aware of the significant benefits that ERP systems can offer. Small organisations have been wrongly convinced by predatory vendors like Sage Software and Intuit that small business accounting software is the solution. These packages most often have no functionality to allow their users to connect the entire enterprise or do common tasks such as customer relationship management.
The achievements of Web based CRM software from organisations like Salesforce.com is a good example of the small business accounting software organisations misleading or misunderstanding the small business community.
It is for this reason that small business ERP businesses like Salesorder.com have begun to make great progress in the market. They sell saas which includes all of the major features a small company requires at very low cost. What is even more interesting is these systems are easy to operate and can be installed in a short amount of time.
At last ERP systems are no longer the privilege of large firms.

Another business mistake avoided
by admin on Oct.28, 2009, under General
My perception is accounting is really unnecessarily complicated but after wrestling with my accounting problems for a while I uncovered a very practical shortcut that I need to share with you. Everyone who starts or runs a business has ’higher priority’ tasks to perform than spend time on their accounting. All organisations have to be committed to doing their accounting if they want to avoid problems.
When I initially started my business my accountant suggested or should I say insisted that I used a small business accounting software package made by a corporation called Sage Software. Without even looking at software I naively went ahead and purchased the lowest cost version I could find. On reflection I am lucky I didn’t waste too much money on this as this software is arguably the most badly designed and most complex application I have ever had to deal with. To be honest whenever I find the word accounting attached to the word software I am always reminded of the first lesson I must share with you and that is most small business accounting software makes the assumption you have a good practical knowledge of bookkeeping.
Just like me small enterprise people are masters of their craft and what they sell and not accounting but in my case I was driven to allocate time to finding a system that would work for me. The second piece of advice I want to share with you is my discovery of a really easy to use and free system called salesorder.com.
Arguably the best application I have discovered, salesorder.com works on the web and is really well designed and of course lets me do my job anywhere I can connect to the Internet. And here is the best bit I want to share with you, the people at salesorder.com know their subject, just like their software they are easy to work with and better still are happy to spend substantial time with their customers (even the free ones) helping folks like me to solve real problems in my business and to top it off they have shared with me the accounting I need to know.
