A Commonsense Approach to Increasing Your Internet Business

When you are just starting out online, the marketing aspect of your business might be daunting.  Without spending a lot of cash on advertising, you can do some things to make some money and earn a reputation.

There are some things that you can do beyond article marketing and getting backlinks to pull traffic and buyers to your site.  Here are five strategies which you can apply to keep your business alive.

TIP 1 – DO NOT BE AFRAID TO CONTACT REAL PEOPLE THAT YOU KNOW OUTSIDE THE INTERNET.

We all have contacts that we have in the “non Internet” world.  These include current and past clients, family members, old co-workers and so forth.  Get in touch and give them an informal update about your business and online presence. Nowadays, this can be very easy if you have a lot of family and friends on Facebook.  Convince them to visit your website and then periodically let them know of any updates. Ask for their opinions.  They are more likely to endorse you if they understand what you do. Since they already know you, they already have some trust and may turn into paying customers.

TIP 2 – FOCUS ON TARGETED TRAFFIC.

You can have all the traffic in the world, but if it is just junk web traffic with a bunch a visitors who are not truly interested in your particular market, those visitors will not translate into paid customers.  You should spend time finding ways to connect with your target audience.

Check out the business directories at your local library which will give you some insight into industries that may be interested in your services. You can sort out different types of companies based on their size, location and so on.

The next step would be to contact them in an informal manner.  Send them a letter — yes, with postage and all — letting them know about your services and your website.  Send a reminder occasionally.   

TIP 3 – GIVE THEM SOMETHING AT NO CHARGE.

Once your prospects visit your site, it’s important that you get their contact details so that you can follow up with them. An easy way to do this is to get them to subscribe to your weekly newsletter or e-zine.

Uphold your promise by delivering newsletters that have good content. This will convince them that you are trustworthy and genuine. Then, it’s up to you to convert them into customers. 

Another thing you can do is to give a trial membership to your website or perhaps a free report that offers some valuable tips. With both of these methods, you can capture the email addresses and continue to follow up with your potential customers.

TIP 4 – ESTABLISH YOURSELF AS AN EXPERT.

Become known as a knowledgeable person in your field. To accomplish this, you need to make a name for yourself. This can be done through a number of methods.

You could form alliances with other like-minded companies, write articles for other publications and include your resource box, attend important conferences and network with the participants, etc.  Another way to establish yourself as an expert is to speak at events or seminars.  Your local newspaper might be interested in printing a column for you.  Keep giving your contacts free and useful information. This is an excellent way to boost your targeted traffic and ultimately, your sales.

TIP 5 – GET HELP WHEN IT IS NEEDED.

Stay in control of your business by hiring some help. Contract with assistants, accountants, coaches or other professionals to take care of your needs.  Hire on a contractor basis only if you feel you need them. If you hire fulltime employees that you may not need, you might be burdened with the cost of regulations and benefits.

In using these offline techniques, you may find that you have gained customers and a healthy dose of prospects.  While these methods are not automated and cannot be accomplished with a few mouse clicks, they will yield long term business relationships.
