Your Domain Name is Crucial to the Success of Your Website
by admin on Jun.15, 2009, under General
The first step in building a website is the registration of a domain name. Whether you are a butcher, baker, or candlestick maker, or if you want to start up a website to display photos of your newborn online, the entire endeavor begins with the registration of your domain name.
Then again you might ask- “What determines the best domain name choice?”. Well it depends. For example, if you are someone who wants to build a website devoted to Spot, the family dog, then your choice of a domain name really doesn’t matter. Why? Most likely in that instance you’re not looking for tons of traffic, your site is probably only something you are going to produce for family and friends, to keep them informed. In a case like this, it does not matter whatsoever if you find a domain name like “bobswebplace.net” or not, since most likely you will only be giving out the name of the site to a few friends and family and maybe some coworkers.
So you can name a website anything as long as it is only meant for a select few. It’s only if traffic is a factor and you want to attract customers, and as many as possible, that the domain name you choose to register really matters. So……
What if the website is for business? What if you want it to attract attention?
The simple answer is, it pays to have a domain name that drives traffic to your site or business. Depending on the type of business, an electrical contractor for example, would people look for your electrical contracting business online if your website had an obscure name like “bills-business.com? If you can, get your domain name exactly the same as your business, that is your best bet. Failing that, at least try to put the category of your business into the name. For example, an antiques website should have a domain name like antiques.com or bobsantiques.com, something that immediately associates the domain name with the theme of the site. It’s all about branding, and making a lasting impression on the target audience or customers.
The WhoIs database contains all domain names registered, and when you are searching it will show whether or not your desired name is already registered. For a quick search of your desired domain name, I have conveniently placed a domain name search engine on StartMyWebsiteToday.com for this very purpose. When searching for the domain name, you will instantly know whether or not the domain name is available, and if so, give you the option to immediately register it. If it’s not available, several alternative domain names will be proposed, to help you fine tune your search, or possibly giving you an acceptable alternative domain name to register instead.

Submitting To The Right Directory

Choosing The Right Directory To Submit To
All links are important and you have control of a lot of the links that point to your website. You don’t want to link build for the sake of it and submitting your website to any old directory is just a waste of time.
Link building plays a big part and doing it right can help dramatically, link building is good for increasing Pagerank, driving more traffic to your website and promoting your keyterms. One of the well known reasons for using website directories is to help promote keyterms, it is also a good way of helping to increase Pagerank. A few years ago you could use website directories to send you good targeted traffic but due to the amount of directories that have been created finding a good one is hard.
I use directories on a day to day basis and I know how important finding a good directory is. There are many free tools available on the web that can help you work out weather or not a particular directory is worth submitting to.
The fist thing to look for when finding a good website directory is weather or not it has been assigned a Pagerank by google, if it has been assigned a Pagerank then that must mean google favours it and the content it displays. I suggest submitting your website to all directories that have a descent Pagerank of 3 and above as the chances are google would have assigned inner pages with a Pagerank as well.
The second most important thing to look for is how much traffic that website receives as it might be convertible and produce some good targeted traffic. You won’t receive a lot of traffic but good directories can still send you a few visitors which can convert into sales. To find out a particular websites traffic stats you can use the “alexa traffic tool”, this give you a good estimate on how many people visit the site daily, weekly and monthly.
When submitting to a website directory remember to use your keywords in the title to help increase the position of them in the search engine results page. Written by: Michael David Tedder Source: Submitting To The Right Directory
