Another business mistake avoided
by admin on Oct.28, 2009, under General
My perception is accounting is really unnecessarily complicated but after wrestling with my accounting problems for a while I uncovered a very practical shortcut that I need to share with you. Everyone who starts or runs a business has ’higher priority’ tasks to perform than spend time on their accounting. All organisations have to be committed to doing their accounting if they want to avoid problems.
When I initially started my business my accountant suggested or should I say insisted that I used a small business accounting software package made by a corporation called Sage Software. Without even looking at software I naively went ahead and purchased the lowest cost version I could find. On reflection I am lucky I didn’t waste too much money on this as this software is arguably the most badly designed and most complex application I have ever had to deal with. To be honest whenever I find the word accounting attached to the word software I am always reminded of the first lesson I must share with you and that is most small business accounting software makes the assumption you have a good practical knowledge of bookkeeping.
Just like me small enterprise people are masters of their craft and what they sell and not accounting but in my case I was driven to allocate time to finding a system that would work for me. The second piece of advice I want to share with you is my discovery of a really easy to use and free system called salesorder.com.
Arguably the best application I have discovered, salesorder.com works on the web and is really well designed and of course lets me do my job anywhere I can connect to the Internet. And here is the best bit I want to share with you, the people at salesorder.com know their subject, just like their software they are easy to work with and better still are happy to spend substantial time with their customers (even the free ones) helping folks like me to solve real problems in my business and to top it off they have shared with me the accounting I need to know.

Remote Working Part 3 – The basic implements
by admin on Sep.12, 2009, under General
self management more….
Before I share with you my arsenal of the best Internet tools that I promise will help you to work remotely, I need to discuss one more point about self management and specifically to do with maintaining your focus and powers of concentration
I’ve spotted and verified a common behavior in individuals who work on the net and I’ve been in contact with for some time and I call this trait the fifty min rule. I uncovered these individuals who focus and work for 50 mins. and then make themselves take a complete ten minute rest and are a significant order of magnitude more efficient and produce a significantly better quality of work than people who don’t have set working practises.
OK as promised I present you with my list of choice remote working software:
Electronic Mail
Google Mail won’t cost you a penny. In my experience the search & label (a bit like folders) features are superior to anything I have previously seen. Googlemail can be a little slow on aging PC’s
Phone calls
Skype continually perplexed me as the connection quality and reliability was unacceptable, but all credit to the engineers at Skype now as they have considerably refined the quality of the service. For just a few bucks a quarter ! am able to call and conference in any phone and Skype subscriber in the world. The latest version of Skype has a collection of really good functions and there is an ever growing list of practical add ons.
Organising Content
Evernote has acquired in excess of a million users in no time at all – it lets you to store, organise and annotate any species of digital media in the Cloud. Just go check it out…it’s free.
Invoicing, Time and Expenses capture, Accounting and CRM
You definitely know that my calling to work remotely was originally encouraged by Quickbooks Online, a small business accounting software system. But it simply doesn’t even come close to the free edition of salesorder.com – a lead to cash system that’s as easy to use as a fork I looked at NetSuite whose pricing (and people) scared me off. My choice here is salesorder.com – Go check it out.

Remote Working Part 1 – Introduction
by admin on Sep.10, 2009, under General
Obviously not everyone is able to work remotely as many jobs require us to go to their office or travel to perform their tasks in person. But for those of us who are able to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share what I have learned and give some practical guidance by distributing it on the web in the hope that I could give others useful ways for adapting to remote working or supervising remote workers.
I would caution you that there are groups of people on the web who will try and get you to buy information for big sums of cash, take my word for it you don’t have to do this.
I am privileged to be permitted to work wherever I choose and just about everybody who asks me what I do for a living wants to learn how I am able to work remotely. Don’t get the wrong idea I am still improving the art of remote working as all of the time I find people on the net who teach me new knowledge and I am always discovering new software and approaches that make my life easier and make me more effective.
During the past seven years I have significantly adapted my working methods to enable me to do the whole of my work remotely with a box of web tools and robust self discipline. One day whilst surfing the web I found Quickbooks online and this opened my eyes to what just might be possible. The discovery of ’hosted’ ‘on demand’ small business accounting software was a pivotal moment for me and the beginning of my ‘remote working journey’.
I want to inform you up front that productively working remotely is as much about the software as it is about self management. Working remotely also means imparting to your co-workers, superiors and clients as to what they can expect and how they will stay in touch with you.
In ‘Remote Working Part 2 – Why self discipline is important’ I talk about how to focus.

How to sell the knowledge in your business on the net
by admin on Jul.06, 2009, under General
I can 100% prove that using online video to teach new skills is the best way to promote and sell your knowledge (the small business accounting software video above took me about an hour) on the internet. I think everyone with a skill should have the opportunity to sell their knowledge online, se here I am going to walk you through how to turn what you know into digital content and sell it to a worldwide audience. Designing and creating your own product gives you a higher return on your investment, builds your confidence and allows you to refine and tune what you have so as you can sell more.
Online video as popularised by YouTube and Podcasting is central to the method I will share with you for delivering your expertise and knowledge to your target audience. I love these video distribution platforms as they really have helped me sell and build a reputation for my low cost alternative to conventional small business accounting software such as Quickbooks or Peachtree.
The best way to decide what content you are going to include in your video is to start by creating a storyboard that lays out the structure and format of your video(s) content. The best way to create a plan or storyboard for your video is to use a slide making tool like Microsoft powerpoint or Apple Keynote, if you are familiar with these already then you are off to a great start. In case you are wondering how much this is going to cost I should say that you can create your storyboard, produce your video and get it to your target market without spending any money what so ever.
To create your videos I recommend a really good program called Camtasia studio from a company called TechSmith, it will enable you to produce high quality videos for YouTube, Podcasts and download to your customers computer in either QuickTime or Windows media format (don’t download the trial yet, just watch all of the tutorials). As I said don’t download the Camtasia software yet as you want to maximise your use of the thirty day trial to get your idea fleshed out and be familiar with the tools.
I will be sending another article to this blog in the next day or so (owner permitting) where I walk through in detail (and at no cost) how to create a detailed storyboard using some of my small business accounting software videos as real live examples, but first you must go and study the tools I have discussed here.
